Nutella Spread Healthy Enough For Breakfast

My schedule in the morning generally goes (ideally)….wake up, down glass of water by my bed, put on a pot of tea, have my morning snack, workout, then have my actual breakfast.  This following recipe is one way that I’ve learned to spice up the morning snack portion of my day.  It usually is some kind of whole grain toasted bread or hearty cracker topped with almond butter, either banana, strawberries or an apple and honey/agave.  When I’m really feeling like I need an added spice to my day I’ll use this instead of my almond butter.


  • 1 15 oz. can of garbanzo beans
  • dollop of almond butter
  • 3 Tbs EVOO (It’s especially good with vanilla or chocolate infused EVOO)
  • 1/2 cup Dutch-Processed cocoa Powder (sometimes I’ll substitute that with my Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hemp Protein Powder)
  • 1/2 cup honey or agave
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2-1 tsp salt (depending on your like of the salty/sweet combination)
  • 2-4 Tbs water


Place all the ingredients, except for the water, into a food processor and puree until smooth, occasionally stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl.  With the food processor still running slowly add the water until the spread is your desired consistency.  Place in a tupperware container (or an old, cleaned out jar if you’re feeling up to it) and use whenever you get the itch.
