Raw Vegan Chocolate Balls

This recipe is from Alicia Silverstone’s The Kind Diet Cookbook.


  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 1/2 cup pitted dates
  • 1/2 cup raw carob powder
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup (I use agave)
  • 1/2 cup almond butter
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt (I up this to 1/2 tsp bc I like the salty sweet combo)
  • 1/2 cup whole almonds
  • 2 cups shredded unsweetened coconut (I leave this out…I’m not a coconut fan)


Process walnuts in a food processor until coarsely ground then add the dates and pulse until combined with the nuts.  Add the carob powder, syrup (agave), almond butter, vanilla extract and salt.  Process until the mixture is thick and smooth…you might have to stop the processor and scrape the sides of the bowl down occasionally.  Add the almonds and pulse a few times until combined, but you’ll want them to remain chunky.

Form the mixture into golf-ball-size balls with your hands.  Roll them balls in coconut (like I said I leave this out) and place in a sealed container in the freezer until hardened.
